Activation of the BOK code now also in the document departments

Dear clients, The Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic informs that from 14.08.2025 foreigners who need to activate personal security code (BOK) on their residence document, they no longer have to deal with this service exclusively at immigration police departments.

Due to the increased interest in this service, which causes longer waiting times at the workplaces of the Aliens Police, it is now possible to apply for the activation of the BOK code at other locations across Slovakia.

Where you can activate the BOK code

Holders of a residence document can apply for activation at:

• Document departments at the district headquarters of the Slovak Police Force
• Client centres district offices throughout the Slovak Republic

This option is available regardless of the place where the document was issued, which significantly simplifies the process for foreigners residing outside the seat of the relevant department of the Aliens Police.

What is the BOK code for

The BOK code is 6-digit personal security code, which enables full use of the electronic services of the state through the portal slovensko.sk. It is needed, for example, for:

• Applying for renewal or change of residence electronically
• Registering as an EU national
• Lodging an appeal or supplementing an application in an administrative procedure
• Electronic communication with the authorities without the need for a personal visit

Electronic signature and certificates (KEP)

Some e-services require Qualified Electronic Signature (QES). To create it, the holder of an activated residence permit needs:

1. Internet access
2. eID application installed on your computer
3. Published by certificates for electronic signature

These certificates can be redeemed by the holder of the activated BOK code online - the whole process is described in detail in the official manual of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic: Guide to issuing certificates (PDF).

Recommendation for foreigners

The Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic recommends that foreigners with an activated BOK code make full use of the available electronic services of the state. In this way they can:

• Save time and avoid waiting at the offices
• Reduce the cost of travelling to the location of the competent authority
• Get faster feedback from the authorities
