Temporary residence - business (trade)

What is the purpose of this type of stay?

Transitional residence for the purpose of business allows citizens of third countries (outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland) to legally do business in Slovakia as self-employed persons (self-employed persons), i.e. as sole traders. This residence entitles the foreigner to:

Set up a trade and do business in the Slovak Republic
Benefit from health and social security as an entrepreneur in the Slovak Republic
Travel within the Schengen area with a valid permit
Once you meet the conditions, extend your stay or apply for permanent residence

This residence is linked to a specific business activity and the foreigner must prove a real business plan and financial security for his/her activity.

Who is this type of stay for?

This type of residence is intended for citizens of third countries who plan to do business in Slovakia as sole traders (self-employed) and their business activity is listed in the list of free, bound or craft trades.

What documents are required from the applicant?

• Valid passport
• Completed application for temporary residence
• Proof of purpose of stay (trade licence or proof of registration with the relevant authority)
• Business plan - demonstration of a real business plan
• Proof of financial security for your residence and business
  • Minimum €5 466.6 per business (depending on the type of activity)
  • Minimum €3 279,96 for personal expenses (for a stay of more than 12 months)
• Criminal record extract from your home country (not older than 90 days)
• Proof of accommodation in Slovakia
• Administrative application fee

How long does this process take?

• The standard time limit for deciding on an application is 90 days
• If documents need to be completed, the process may be extended
• Once the residence has been approved, the applicant has 30 days to register your residence with the Aliens Police

What are the conditions for doing business?

• The applicant must demonstrate a realistic business plan and finance to start the business
• Must obtain trade licence for a specific activity
• The business activity must be legally enforceable and profitable
• After the residence is granted, he/she is obliged to 60 days to start a business
• The residence permit is tied to a specific business activity
