Verification of the foreigner's invitation
What is invitation verification and what is it for?
Invitation verification to Slovakia refers to the process by which verifies the purpose and legitimacy of the alien's visit in Slovakia. This act is carried out by the foreign police in the place of residence of the applicant for verification of the invitation. This may be part of the process of obtaining a visa or residence permit for foreigners who plan to visit Slovakia for a specific time and purpose, such as hiking, visiting family, business meetings, studying or other activities.
The invitation is a supporting document that serves the embassy of the Slovak Republic for decision-making in the procedure for granting a Schengen visa. The invitation may be replaced by a hosting agreement (in connection with the admission of foreigners for research and development purposes).
The invitation shall be submitted on an official form, which shall contain information about the inviting person, the invited foreigner, the purpose for which the foreigner is invited to the territory of the Slovak Republic, the inviting person's commitment to pay all costs related to the stay and departure of the invited foreigner.
Who can invite a foreigner (third country national) to the territory of the Slovak Republic?
- citizen of the Slovak Republic with permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic
- foreigner with legal residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic (exceptions are regulated in Section 19(2)(a/) of Act No. 404/2011 Coll. on the residence of foreigners)
- a legal entity with its registered office in the Slovak Republic
How does the invitation verification process work?
The request for verification of the invitation shall be made in person at the department of the Aliens Police locally competent according to the place of residence of the inviting person. Foreign Police Department of the PZ decide on the verification of the invitation within 15 days from receipt of the application.
The certificate of verification of the invitation is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
When can an invitation be refused?
The Aliens Police Department may refuse a request for verification of an invitation in cases where it detects possible misuse of the verification of the invitation or in cases where there is a suspicion of a potential breach of security on the territory of the Slovak Republic. In practice, we also encounter refusals where applicants cannot credibly prove the relationship between the invited person and the applicant for verification of the invitation. Thus, more often than not, it is precisely in cases where the verification of the invitation is abused by the invited person himself through the applicant for verification of the invitation.
