From 2 April 2025, the UK Government is introducing mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for travellers. Here's an overview of important information to help you prepare for your trip.
When to register?
- Registration will be available from 5 March 2025.
- From 2 April 2025 registration will be compulsory.
- Registration must be carried out at least 3 working days before travel.
- The authorisation decision shall normally be issued within 3 working days, in rare cases it may take longer.
Who doesn't need an ETA?
ETA is not required for citizens of the Slovak Republic who:- They have permission to stay in the UK (settled or provisional settled status).
- They hold a visa for the UK.
- They have dual citizenship (British/Irish and Slovak) and a valid British or Irish passport.
- Have legal residence in Ireland under the Common Travel Area (CTA) when travelling to the UK (proof of residence may be required).
- They are exempt from immigration controls (e.g. diplomats with a valid vignette).
- They transit through Manchester or Heathrow airports without going through border control (temporary exception).
Who needs an ETA?
ETA is compulsory for citizens of the Slovak Republic who:- They are planning a short stay in the UK (e.g. tourism, visiting friends, business trips, land transit).
- They do not have a valid immigration status in the UK.
- They fall into the category of T5 Creatives (members of art and film crews, actors, dancers, musicians).
- They are registered as legally resident in Ireland and are travelling to the UK from outside the CTA.
What do I need to register?
- Provide contact details.
- Enter the details of the passport that will be used for the trip.
- Upload a recent digital photo or take a photo via the app.
- Answer a set of questions.
- Pay the fee GBP 10 (planned increase to 16 GBP).
ETA validity
- ETA is valid 2 years and digitally linked to the passport.
- If you lose your passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.

Registration for another person
If you are applying for an ETA for a person who is not with you, do the following:- Use the website instead of the app.
- In the app, select the option "If you are applying for someone not with you, apply online instead", which will redirect you to the website.
