Renewal of temporary residence
Foreigners (third country nationals) who already have a temporary residence permit in the Slovak Republic may apply for a temporary residence permit later than 6 months before its expiry renewal of the foreigner's temporary residence.
This process is important for people who are in Slovakia for a long period of time, whether for business, employment, study or family reunification. In the case of entrepreneurs (self-employed persons) and managing directors of companies, the renewal of residence is essential for the continuation of their activities in the Slovak Republic.
Who can apply for renewal of temporary residence
Third-country nationals who have already been granted a temporary residence permit and wish to continue to stay legally in Slovakia may apply for renewal of their temporary residence in the Slovak Republic. The renewal of residence is possible if the foreigner continues to meet the conditions for which the residence was originally granted.
They can apply to renew their temporary residence by:
- people working or doing business in the SR,
- university students and researchers,
- family members of foreigners with a residence permit,
- people with other legal grounds for staying in the country.
When applying, it must be shown that the grounds for residence continue to exist and that the alien has fulfilled all legal obligationssuch as financial security, health insurance and a smooth stay in the Slovak Republic. The Aliens Police will then assess the validity of the application and decide whether to approve it.
Conditions for renewal
A foreigner who wishes to apply for renewal of temporary residence in the Slovak Republic must continue to meet the legal conditions for residence and submit the relevant documents. The basic requirements include:
- Proving the purpose of your stay - the applicant must prove that he or she continues to meet the reasons for which the temporary stay was granted (e.g. employment, studies, family ties).
- Financial security - the foreigner must prove sufficient financial means to stay in the Slovak Republic, the amount required depends on the purpose of the stay and the current minimum subsistence level.
- Integrity - a recent criminal record extract from the applicant's home country and all countries in which the applicant has lived for a long time, duly legalised.
- Proof of accommodation - Housing must be provided and a lease, title deed or consent of the property owner must be provided.
- Health insurance - the applicant must have valid health insurance in the Slovak Republic.

When renewing the stay, the Aliens Police assesses whether the foreigner actually fulfils the purpose of the stay and whether he/she has sufficient financial, material and legal security for further stay in the Slovak Republic.

Applying for renewal of residence
The application shall be submitted in person at the department of the Aliens Police in the Slovak Republic where the alien has a registered previous residence. Such an application cannot be submitted on the basis of a power of attorney, i.e. on behalf of the applicant. A representative person may assist with the application, however, due to the fact that the applicant must submit to the taking of biometric data, i.e. fingerprints and facial images, when applying for residence.
A foreigner may apply for temporary residence for the purpose of doing business in the Slovak Republic only if he/she is lawfully residing on the basis of visa-free travel or has been granted a D national visa. The application for renewal of temporary residence is made on an official form. When submitting it, the foreigner is obliged to present a valid passport together with all the documents stipulated by law. - Failure to comply with the conditions of residence - if the applicant fails to prove that he/she has complied with all the conditions laid down by the legislation during the previous stay (e.g. illegal employment, failure to notify a change of address, etc.).
Residency renewal is an option for those who wish to continue to reside in the Slovak Republic and fulfil their obligations. With proper preparation and compliance with all conditions, the process can be successful. It is important to carefully prepare all documents, meet all conditions and eliminate any deficiencies that could lead to the rejection of the application.
