Invitation verification

Verification of the foreigner's invitation is the process of confirming the authenticity and validity of the document by which the foreigner is invited to the territory of Slovakia. This document, known as an 'Invitation for a foreigner', is usually issued by a Slovak citizen, a legal person or another authorised entity which has also assumed responsibility for the foreigner's stay in Slovakia.

The invitation is a supporting document that serves the representative office of the Slovak Republic to make decisions in the process of granting a Schengen visa. The invitation can be replaced by a hosting agreement (in connection with the reception of foreigners for research and development purposes). This document is necessary to obtain a Schengen visa.

The invitation shall be submitted on an official form, which shall contain information about the inviting person, the invited foreigner, the purpose for which the foreigner is invited to the territory of the Slovak Republic, the inviting person's commitment to pay all costs related to the stay and departure of the invited foreigner.

Who can apply for verification of an invitation

  • citizen of the Slovak Republic with permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic
  • foreigner with legal residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic (exceptions are regulated in Section 19(2)(a/) of Act No. 404/2011 Coll. on the residence of foreigners)
  • a legal entity with its registered office in the Slovak Republic

How the invitation verification process works

The request for verification of the invitation shall be submitted in person at the department of the Aliens Police locally competent according to the place of residence of the inviting person. The Aliens Police Department of the Police Corps shall decide on the verification of the invitation within 15 days of receipt of the request. The certificate of verification of the invitation shall be valid for 90 days from the date of its issue.

When an invitation may be refused

The Aliens Police Department may refuse a request for verification of an invitation in cases where it detects possible misuse of the verification of the invitation or in cases where there is a suspicion of a potential breach of security on the territory of the Slovak Republic. In practice, we also encounter refusals where applicants cannot credibly prove the relationship between the invited person and the applicant for verification of the invitation. Thus, more often than not, it is precisely in cases where the verification of the invitation is abused by the invited person himself through the applicant for verification of the invitation.

Submitting a request for verification of an invitation

The application for verification of the invitation to the Aliens Police shall be made in person at the local office. The applicant must fill in the form available on the police website or directly at the office. This form contains basic information about the inviting person and the person invited.

The application must be accompanied by the original or a certified copy of the invitation letter, as well as personal documents such as an ID card or passport. In some cases, it may also be necessary to submit additional documents as required by the Aliens Police.

Once the application has been submitted, the Aliens Police will check the invitation and its compliance with the regulations. If everything is in order, the applicant will be informed of the verification. There may be a fee for the process, so it is a good idea to find out the amount of the fees in advance at the specific branch.

Needed documents

  1. Completed application form - the official form is correctly and completely filled in "Request for verification of invitation (237,7 kB) PDF".

  2. Original or certified copy of the invitation from the invited person, which must meet the requirements laid down by law.

  3. Applicant's personal document - ID card or passport (depending on whether you are a citizen of the Slovak Republic or a foreigner).

  5. Other documents - In some cases, additional documents may be required based on individual circumstances (e.g. proof of financial eligibility, travel plan, etc.).

Approval process

The police have a legal deadline of 15 days to decide on the request.
If necessary, it may ask for the documentation to be completed, which may prolong the process.

Issuing the verification of the invitation

If the verification of the invitation is approved, the applicant or the person representing him/her must collect it in person at the relevant Aliens Police Department where it was filed. The administrative authority shall issue the applicant with a document entitled 'Verification of invitation' stamped and signed by the competent police officer.

Obligations of applying a certified invitation

Once a certified invitation has been issued, it must be used no later than 90 days after it is issued.
